Make Money Writing for Life123.com

So the other day, I received an email out of nowhere to checkout Life123.com. I like to think its because of my work :) but likely just a marketing solicitation. Anyway, the email marketing campaign worked, and I decided to check out the site, register, and provide an outline of how you can make money writing for Life123.com if you’re looking for a new or different freelance writing gig to help you make more money.

Life123.com Writer Eligibility Requirements

Unfortunately for the non-US writers out there, Life123.com requires that you be a legal resident of the United States, be over the age of 18, have a work-eligible SSN, and be a good citizen of their growing writing community. As with most content sites out there, you agree they can nuke your account for any reason, at any time…

What Makes Life123 Different?

Life123 aims to produce a high-quality content site and is an open-competitor in the “How-To” niche with sites such as about.com, ehow.com, and smaller sites such as Tech FAQ. The corporation who owns Life123 also owns Ask.com, match.com, and several other large, well-known web entities. Learning from some of the mistakes of the other content sites out there that open up submissions to the freelance writer population with regards to topic choice, niche, etc, Life123 controls the content topics to a degree, but in return offers a “no math required” method of payout determination that comes via PayPal.

How Do You Sign-up for Life123 to Make Money Writing?

Its pretty easy. I think it took me about 90 seconds, and that’s because I waited to confirm the email while I tidied up an article for a different site at the time. You will be asked to verify that you are a U.S. resident, provide your display name, email address, and snail mail address at the time of registration. You will not enter your paypal address for getting paid until after you have confirmed your registration email. That’s it. After you get approved as a basic writer for the site, they permit you to submit up to 10 articles per-month until you increase your “rank” or “level” in their four tier writer hierarchy. At the beginning level, there is an editing process before your content will go live on the Internet and start making you money.

Graduating to the Next Level on Life123

The site has four tiers of writer. Members (newbies who have complete an apprentice article which has to be reviewed and approved by an editor). Once this happens, you then become a contributor who can subit up to 10 articles a month. From how I read the TOS, it “appears” as though your first article is not paid. To graduate from Contributor to Writer, you have to write 10 articles and have a total of 500 unique page views across all of your articles. Once you graduate to Writer, you can submit 40 articles a month. To get to the “Expert” level, you must have 25 articles and a minimum of 2,500 unique page views. An Expert can contribute up to 150 articles a month.

How Do I Make Money Writing for Life 123?

The neat thing with the Life123 payment scale, is that it is not cheap, doesn’t take 10,000 views to make $20 USD like Associated Content, and you are not in the dark like on eHow on what the payment scheme is. In short:
- $5 USD for your 50th unique view
- $5 USD for the 551st view
- $10 USD for the 1052nd view
for a total of $20 USD. Pretty neat right? Now, those of you who are on the 5 year plan will have a rightful point that your earning potential on the other popular sites is greater, but for those who need the money sooner than later should enjoy the quicker payout to $20 USD. And of course, assume the company is going to make more than you eventually on the article. Once you make a minimum of $10 USD, they will pay your paypal once a month (note I didn’t see a date yet when registering and going through the site).

Picking a Topic on Life123

This area is a bit more rigid than other writing sites in order to give the site architects more control over the content. The categories are labeled “taxonomies” where you start by selecting a general topic such as say “Technology”. You then have several options to pick from, for example “Computer Networking” with a further subcategory choice such as “Wireless Networking.” From there, you follow the directions on the site for formatting and fleshing out your content. Your article will need to be at least 300 words and no more than 1000 in length, can not contain HTML or links to references, and no pictures

So, there you have it. Goods and bads just like any other freelance writing site you’ll find out there, but Life123 definitely appears to have potential for higher short-term earnings than many of us find with other sites out there to make money writing.
