Make Money Freelance Writing for Hubpages

So I’ve been a bit busy with other projects the past few months, but am getting back to putting up some more content to help out new freelance writers. A site that I’ve been using recently for some side writing is Hubpages. On Hubpages, you create an article which is called a hub on the site. It is primarily monetized through Adsense, but you can elect to input Amazon and other affiliate ID’s that the site supports as well. Unlike eHow and some other sites, the Hubpages folks advertise the “split” that you make with them on earnings (60/40 in their favor).

Getting Started Making Money Freelance Writing for Hubpages

Getting started with Hubpages is pretty straight forward. Just go to their site and register with a valid email. During the registration process you will be asked to enter several areas or niches that you are interested in. You can do this on the fly or surf their site a bit to get a feel for what the category topics are.

Once you’re registered you can now look at writing your first hub. To start the process,
Step 1:
Select the “Start a New Hub” menu button that’s located in the upper, center portion of the Hubpages site.

Step 2:
Enter your title and check to see if the uniform resource locator (URL) that hubpages has assigned to the hub is what you desire.

Step 3:
Select the category for your article. I recommend searching first in case you can find something more specific than what the default category options are.

Step 4:
Choose a layout for your hub from the three listed on the site. Each hub has a picture component, text, and comments section. You can add additional text, pictures, and link components later as well as changing the order of the components of the hub around.

Step 5:
Enter tags that are relevant to your article or based on the keywords you are using for the hub.

Step 6:
Agree to the TOS that your’re not writing about a topic that is in violation, you didn’t steal the content, and you’re otherwise a good “Google Citizen”.

Step 7:
Time to upload your image(s), text, etc, edit and publish the hub!

Getting Paid by Hubpages

The affiliate options on Hubpages at the time of this writing are: Adsense, Amazon, Ebay, and Kontera. You can also enter a Google Analytics ID in order to better conduct SEO on your Hubs! Unlike other third party freelance writing sites, Hubpages will display ads with your personal ID’s 40 times of 100 ad displays. They have removed themselves from the payment loop and that is left to your relationship with the supported advertising models. That can be a tad frustrating for the new writer, however, since Google doesn’t payout until you hit $100 USD, but does pose a higher potential for earnings than you may see from other 3rd party sites.

Downside of Freelance Writing for Hubpages

Of course, just like any other third party site, you are sharing earnings with the site owner in exchange for Hubpages providing you the forum to make money. The other big downer, is if you are writing a Hubpage to help with SEO of another article or site that you are working on, your URL’s in the hubs will be made “nofollow” if your profile hub rating falls below 75. From what I’ve seen, to stay about 75, you need to login to Hubpages at least every other day. To get a higher ranking, you’ll need to comment on a few other hubpage authors articles, rate them, etc. It took a few days of basically being a “good neighbor” for my hubpages profile to get above 75 and stay there. If you just don’t login for a while, then you will drop below 75 and your links will become nofollow. Your earnings won’t stop, just the slight tweak on the links for those who use the Web 2.0 properties of Hubpages for SEO.

If you have any questions, just let me know. The  signup for hubpages is just their main web page: www.hubpages.com. And if you’re extremely bored, some of the hubs that I’ve done:

That's really interesting what you said about keeping a Hubscore of 75. Where did you find the info about logging in every other day? I am really trying to figure out what makes up the Hubscore. Thanks!

Hi, sorry it took a few days to get back to you. Before I started posting articles on Hubpages, I'd read on netbuilders (netbuilders.org) forum a bit about some of the Hubpages drawbacks, Hubpages hubs on the topic, and before writing this article did some testing on my own. You can probably go longer than every other day, but I would forget if I don't login to Hubpages at that frequency.

Is it because many people on the internet who have a wide knowledge on consumer electronics are unaware of hubpages and therefore have not signed up for it?
