My Top 3 Favorite Freelance Writing Gigs
Not too long ago, I wrote a post on Finding Freelance Writing Gigs. Although there are quite a few freelance writing opportunities out there for the new writer, it can be pretty frustrating to find a writing job or gig that gives you immediate gratification with some money in your PayPal account within a week or two of starting to write! My stance remains the same that for the new writer, Associated Content is the single-best freelance writing website to cut your teeth, make a little money, and build an on-line portfolio to use as an in-road to bigger paying gigs. Now that I’ve been writing for a while (part-time mind you, not close tot the Shoe Money affiliate-level guru, just a person like you trying to make a bit of money outside of my day job!), I thought it best to outline my favorite freelance writing gigs that don’t involve writing for private clients. Writing direct for someone definitely has the biggest potential, but we’re talking about the average person who’s going to Google, Yahoo, or MSN Search to try and find help making money freelance writing at home here! I won’t fib to you though, I do a fair amount of private work now that I’ve been freelance writing for a bit, but these gigs are ones that are either accessible to you as soon as you finish reading this article, or within a month of working hard at writing.
#1 Favorite Freelance Writing Gig – Demand Studios
I kind of lucked upon Demand Studios. I had been writing for Associated Content and some private contracts for a bit, but was finding myself getting annoyed at not having a decent paying gig that I could rely on for my bills. AC page views (and associated money) is ok, but you’re not going to pay off a ton of debt with the money from AC unless you produce quality, volume-level articles. Coupled with a once-a-month payday for the page view money, I just needed something else that paid more quickly that I could base my monthly budget off of. I read an article about Demand Studios paying $15 USD per article, and decided I would give it a try. To apply for Demand Studios, you have to have a few things you don’t need for Associated Content and a few of the other writing websites: 1 – A resume, 2 – Writing Sample(s), and 3 – Preferrably a URL or three of additional writing samples. Depending on the categories that you choose to apply for with Demand Studios, they may or may not accept your application. Still, once you have a portfolio developed, you can’t beat their pay for a mid-level paying freelance writing gig!
#2 Favorite Freelance Writing Gig – Associated Content
I’m convinced that Associated Content is where you need to start freelance writing if you don’t have any Web Content development experience. It takes one to two weeks to get your initial, original content reviewed, and hopefully published. Once you have three articles through their editors, you can self-publish articles for per-view earnings. A new writer starts out at $1.50 USD per thousand page views and based on the total number of views that you accumulate, this amount increases. AC also pays up-front money on pre-defined topics that you can claim. These typically pay between $1 and $5 USD (with the majority being between $1 and $3), however, you still get view money on anything you are paid up front for writing. Just for this reason, AC is a great passive income source to help complement other writing that you will start doing. I reccommend that you pick 1-3 niches to focus on at most when you first start out writing until you determine what works best for you. Aftger writing for a while, my AC publishing varies from month to month depending on my other gigs, but I always make it a point to at least publish several articles a month here now.
#3 Favorite Freelance Writing Gig – My Blogs
Now, I don’t make a ton on my blogs (yet!). It takes time to do so, and guess what? We’ll all never likely get to theJohnny Chow or Shoe Money level on blogs alone any time soon. I have a number of websites that I muck with, my my primary focus for blog writing has been Making Money Freelance Writing and College Hoops Video. I enjoy writing for both, even though I know that monetarily I would be smarter to write more DS and other private articles with the time I put into each. It helps me clear the brain for my contract work that I may or may not be fully into writing all of the time! So, once you’ve been writing for a bit, why not start a free blog at either wordpress or blogspot? You don’t have to pay for hosting, its the right price, and you start to get your teeth wet for what works and doesn’t work in the blog arena in case you decide to get serious with making money on a blog!
That’s about it. Hopefully you’ll find these tips helpful. Please let us know what does and doesn’t work for you!
