Work at Home – Finding a Freelance Writing Specialty

Work at Home. Almost as hard as writing your first freelance article is finding a genre and a specialty or three to write in consistently. When you first get started, the temptation is to write about everything out there…this is o.k., but you will never land on really decently paid gigs if you stick to this tactic. Instead you need to start thinking about what topic or topics that you 1 – Know a lot about, 2 – Enjoy, and 3- Want to spend time researching and writing about. I recommend having two or three areas of interest to help keep your mind sharp and avoid ‘writer’s block’!

Work at Home – Choosing a Freelance Writing Style

There are several styles of writing that you will find popular across different websites. First, of course is fiction. For the new author, unless you are significantly experienced in this area from college or other trade writing and publication, I recommend you steer clear until you’re an experienced author or you could get significantly frustrated with your efforts. Some others are technical writing, How-To’s, Journalistic, and grant writing to name a few. You will likely find the How-To or Journalistic formats easiest to get started with and by all means experiment! You just don’t know what you don’t know when you’re starting out and may find that grant writing is the easiest thing in the world for you to do!

Work at Home – Picking Your Freelance Writing Topics

The best thing about working at home is you are your own boss. The worst thing about working at home is just that! You are your own boss. Picking your primary topics can be a challenge at first. Some that you will likely find a niche within (as well as enjoy) to consider are: 1 – Sports (pick a common sport or sport(s) to write about), 2 – Gossip/Celebrity (Readers never seem to get enough of this stuff!), 3 – Personal Enrichment, 4 – Politics, and 5 – Business/Finance.
You can alternate between topics, or spend a few days writing on one and shift to another as you find yourself getting bored with the current topic. The bottom-line is pick a method that works for you and you should see the best results!
