Work at Home. A natural extension to your freelance writing efforts will be at some point to create a blog or three. When you decide to do this, one of the challenges you may find is what wordpress plug-ins should you use to get started! The following is a good list of 10 (well really 10 and a good resource for more) to get you started! Please feel free to include more in the comments of this article!
Work at Home – 10 Wordpress Plugins to Use on Your Blog
#1 AkismetAkismet comes with your wordpress download and is a great anti-spam plugin to use. You have to register at Wordpress to get an API Key but will be well-worth your time.
All in One SEO Pack is a great SEO option for your wordpress-driven blog to help with getting ranked by Search Engines. It helps optimize your posts, page titles, and summaries with meta descriptions and tag generation.
#3 Dofollow
The DoFollow plugin helps you encourage comments on you blog by allowing browsers to follow URL’s of commenter’s blogs on your site.
#4 Google XML SitemapsGoogle XML Sitemaps will generate a compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog which is supported by all the major search engines. Basically a sitemap tells the search engines how, when and what to index your site.
#5 Intense Debate Comment and Feed Plugin
With Intense Debate, you get the power of a number of features that before required multiple plug-ins to be installed on your blog. Its an all-in-one comment system, that threads comments, permits reply by email, has built-in twitter functionality, and gives you more power over the moderation of comments as the site-admin. They also allow you to import existing comments (and export if you get tired of their system).
#6 WP Database Backup The first time I lost over a few hours of work on a website, was the last time that I didn’t make sure I had a back-up of work method in place. This plug-in lets you automate the backup of your blog in case, say you nuke it doing some website admin by accident!
WP Super Cache is a great plug-in for speading up the time your blog takes to serve files. You’ll speed up your blog significantly and find it pretty straightforward to use!
Unless you’re writing in a country-specific niche, why not enable basic language translation for your blog? You can choose between Google, Babel Fish, Promt, and FreeTranslations.com when configuring the translator as well as includes SEO optimization.
This plug-in lets you incorporate Google Analytics tracking to your blog without having to modify your wordpress template. Easy to use, and all you need is a Google Analytics account to set it up.
#10 WordPress.com Stats
A great, built-in stats package to give you insight on what’s working, popular, and so forth on your blog. A great compliment to Google Analytics.
#11 Wphacks.Com Guide to Free WordPress Plugins
Find a number of other great, free wordpress plugings at the WP Hacks blog!
In SummaryAlthough this is just a starting list of WordPress plug-ins, its a great one to use to get started with a WordPress blog if you are unfamiliar with setting one up!
