Web Design – Five Rules to Follow
So, you’ve decided to make money online through monetizing a website? Well, when it comes to web-site building, you should pay extra attention to every minute detail to ensure it has the desired behavior before going live on the web. Here are some important design tips to keep in mind for optimizing your website(s)!
Web Design Rule Number 1
1) Do not use splash pages
Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. In fact, they are just that — pretty with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the “back” button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page to avoid having them bounce to another website.
2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements
Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate so pay special attention to where you are going to place your ads and continue to experiment for what works best for your website to make money. Consider weaving relevant affiliate links or ads into the context of your content so that your reader don’t feel like they are being pushed to click or buy something from your site.
3) Have simple and clear web-site navigation
You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate without having to think about what they are doing, they will leave your site.
4) Ensure the User Knows Where They Are
When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are at any given moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means hitting the back button, opening a new tab, or just going back to Google or Yahoo to find another site to view!
5) Avoid using audio on your site
If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they’re not annoyed by some audio looping on and on on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine. Another good technique to use, is to have a media player embedded with the content ‘paused.’ This allows your site viewers to play audio if they want to hear it, but does not annoy them at the same time!
