SEO Tools - Home page for the Google Sitemap Plugin

When a web author hears the term site map, they will commonly think of the navigation tool that has been around the web since inception. In recent years, however, the term has come to also refer to an XML based file which aids search engines in crawling a website’ s content for indexing content. In the early days of search engines, they could become stuck in infinite, self-referencing loops on the web. Early site maps in text format were adopted to help engines crawl one’s site more efficiently (and quickly), however, each search engine company preferred a different format. In order to provide standardization across the various search engine companies, an XML format was adopted in order to provide a well-defined guide to all search engines to aid in the crawling process.

SEO Tools – Two Options for Site Map Creation

Depending on the type of website you are hosting, there are two good, free options for creating a Site Map, Google’s Site Map Builder, and the Word Press Site Map plugin.

Sitemap Building Tool #1 Google’s SiteMapbuilder.net

Google’s SiteMapBuilder is one freely available tool to aid the web developer in creating a site map for his or her content. In order to build your sitemap for a non-wordpress site, go to http://www.sitemapbuilder.net. Enter the site’s URL to create the sitemap.xml and select the ‘Extract URL’s from this page button.’ Then choose the ‘Generate Google Site Map XML button.’ When the tool is finished, choose the ‘Click here to download’ button to download the XML file to your computer so you can upload it to your website and any applicable Search Engines.

Sitemap Building Tool #2 Google XML Sitemap Wordpress Plugin

The Google XML Sitemaps plugin will generate a compatible sitemap of your WordPress blog that is supported by all the major search engines. You can download it directly from the link in this article or through the Wordpress Plugin search to add to your blog. Once you have installed the plugin, ensure you read the installation notes on when you should manually generate the sitemap to ensure it stays current. If you haven’t been indexed by Google yet, submit your sitemap via Google Webmasters Tools using your existing Google account, or create an account if you don’t have one yet.
