SEO Tips for Freelancers. For the new freelance author, the term SEO is another mystical entity that can seem daunting to understand let alone apply in your first freelance articles! Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in a freelance writing context refers to the process of increasing the views or traffic to your article through optimization of your content for search results. The main idea being that the higher your article appears on a search engine result list, the more views (and more money) that you will see. SEO takes a look at how search engines index content and attempts to get your content ranked as high as possible in the relevant subject areas.

SEO Tips – Keyword/Keyphrase Usage

For the normal freelance writing article of 4-500 words, you will want to focus on a primary key word or phrase throughout your article. The majority of the time, your key word and phrase will be part of the title of your article. The natural follow-on question is how ofter to use the key words or phrases in the writing? A good rule of thumb is to make 1.5 to 6.5% of your words in a given article should be the primary key word or phrase. If you use less than 1.5% then you run the risk of search engines not really picking your article up. If greater than 6.5% then you run the risk of the search engines potentially marking your content as spam! Now, if you ask any three SEO experts on what the max percentage should be, its kind of like asking three competing doctors for medical advice. They will likely tell you a different min/max percentage to use. I would recommend trying out some different percentages and use what percentages have the best performance for you. For my writing, I’ve found that 1 – 2 % normally works best depending on the expected demand for the topic is.

SEO Tips – Where to Use Keywords in Your Article

When teaching new writers about using key words and phrases, I always tell them to apply the following rule: Use your keyword or phrase in the following locations: 1 – The Article Title, 2 – At the start of the introduction paragraph, 3 – Again in the body of the introduction paragraph, 4 – Once in the body of the article, and 5- Once in the concluding paragraph of the article. If you write a 400 word article, this puts you at 1.25 % keyword density without thinking about it! If you can find just one more place in your article for the keyword or phrase, then you’re at 1.5% and you can build from there!

I believe 6.5% Keyword density is a good strategy !! but in extreme stage 8% would be wise !!
